What is the Purpose of this Permit?
To temporarily increase the licensed weight of a vehicle, but not more than the legal capacity of the vehicle.

What Activities Require this Permit?
The permit is used to temporarily increase the licensed weight of a vehicle, but not more than legal capacity. Before purchasing temporary addition tonnage the vehicle must be licensed to at least 40,000 pounds for solo units and 80,000 pounds for combinations. A Temporary License Permit (Trip Permit) may be used to increase licensed weight to the required 40,000 or 80,000 pounds to qualify for the temporary Additional Tonnage Permit (additional tonnage may not be sold for periods greater than the period covered by the Trip Permits). Minimum permit duration 5 days.
How Much Will this Permit Cost?
Fee rate is $2.80 per day for each 2,000 pounds (The fee schedule is available on page 4-7 in WSDOT's Commercial Vehicle Guide)

The application which is called 'DOT Form 560-029' is online and can be accessed at https://wsdot.wa.gov/commercial-vehicle/permits/home.
Do I Need to Include Anything with my Application?
No - Only the permit application and permit fee is required to issue the permit (only 3 permits can be issued in a thirty day period)
Is the Decision on my Permit Dependent on Anything Besides the Information in my Application?
No - The application and permit fee is all that is required in order to issue the permit
How Long Will it Take to Review my Application?
This permit is issued as requested. There is no review time necessary.

You can self-issue this permit type by accessing WSDOT's self issue permit program at https://wsdot.wa.gov/commercial-vehicle/permits/self-issue, you can contact a Permit Agent or visit any WSDOT Permit Office.

How Long is my Permit Valid?
Permit is valid for the period purchased, beginning the date of purchased, and for a minimum of five (5) days
What is the Appeal Process for the Permit?
N/A
Notes / Comments:
Permits are valid for periods of not less than five days and shall authorize the movement of loads not exceeding the weights limits set forth in RCW 46.44.041 and 46.44.042. Fees may not be prorated.
Permit Timeliness Results

Permit Timeliness data collection is in response to a State Auditor’s Performance Audit and RCW 43.42A. Each regulatory agency developed a plan to improve permit clarity, predictability, and timeliness. Each agency considers the customers experience to ensure permit assistance is simple to use, easy to access, and designed in a customer-friendly manner. Agencies report progress to the Governor’s Office for Regulatory Innovation and Assistance (ORIA). ORIA prepares and distributes reports, with participation from the State Auditor’s Office and Results Washington.
